The department has a class set of iPads but not enough keyboards, so each student opens GarageBand's Keyboard instrument, picks a piano sound and composes with headphones on. The brief is an eight-bar melody in 4/4 using four pitches (C, D, E and G), with a rhythm pattern that repeats and a last note that sounds finished. Students write the melody as letter names under a rhythm grid in their books and practise it until it is secure. Nobody records in this lesson: in the last ten minutes several students perform their melody live to the class through the iPad speaker, and the class says where each phrase ends.
