Year 7 are about to burn small samples of three fuels on heatproof mats and compare their flames, and department policy is that every class sees the full safety briefing before any flame is lit. The teacher plays the five-minute video the science technician made, embedded in the lesson's PowerPoint: tying back hair, goggles on, where the gas tap sits, lighting the Bunsen burner with the air hole closed, and what to do if a sleeve or hair catches. Afterwards the teacher questions the class out loud, cold-calling at least one student on each of the eight safety rules, and anyone unsure goes through that step again with the teacher at the front bench while the rest set up. Students sign the practical safety checklist in their books before collecting equipment.
