Year 6 are learning how texture builds and thins across a piece. The teacher plays the opening of Daft Punk's "Around the World" and points out how the parts enter one at a time, then sets the brief: a 24-bar piece at 110 bpm in three eight-bar sections, using a drum loop, a bass loop, a chord loop and one melodic loop. On BandLab for Education class accounts, each child drags loops from the library onto four tracks, bringing them in one by one across the intro, playing all four together in the groove and removing them in turn in the outro, and plays the piece back to adjust where each loop starts. In the last ten minutes the teacher goes round and listens to each piece, asking the child which bar has the thickest texture. Before the school moved to Chromebooks, the same brief ran in GarageBand on the class iPads, and it is taught and heard the same way now.
