Year 5 are learning how germs spread and why handwashing matters. Following the school's CLEAPSS guidance on growing fungi on food, three volunteers each touch a slice of the same bread: one straight after break, one after rinsing with water only and one after washing with soap for twenty seconds, while a fourth slice is handled only with a clean spoon. Each slice goes into a zip bag that is sealed, taped shut and never opened again, and the four bags are pinned side by side on a board in a shaded corner, with a plugged-in school tablet on a stand recording them in time-lapse mode. Two weeks later the teacher plays the footage back on the board in under a minute, and the class watch spots of mould appear and spread, usually first and most on the unwashed slice. The class then write three handwashing tips for the Reception toilets, and the teacher disposes of the bags unopened as the guidance sets out.
