Year 5 have been singing pentatonic songs such as "Auld Lang Syne" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and hearing how five notes fit together without clashing. The teacher opens GarageBand's Keyboard on the iPads and sets its scale to major pentatonic, which leaves the five notes C, D, E, G and A under the children's fingers. In pairs, one child makes up a two-bar question that ends on D or E and the other replies with a two-bar answer that ends on C, then they swap roles for a second pair of phrases. They practise with headphones, write the letter names in their books, and nothing is recorded. The lesson ends with each pair performing live through the iPad speaker while the teacher holds a C and G drone on the piano. Last year the class did this on glockenspiels with the F and B bars taken off.
