The teacher shows an A-level chemistry question with the command word 'suggest': why the uncatalysed reaction between peroxodisulfate ions and iodide ions is slow. Four anonymised answers written by the teacher sit beside it, from one that mentions the repulsion between two negative ions to one that says the reaction 'needs more energy'. Students use a Mentimeter ranking question to order the four answers by the marks they expect each to earn, and the class ranking appears on the board. The teacher reveals the mark each answer earns against a mark scheme written in the exam board style and focuses discussion on the answer the class placed furthest from its mark. Students end by rewriting the weakest answer so that it would earn full marks.
