Year 11 are learning about income before many start apprenticeships or part-time jobs. The teacher gives each student a fictional payslip for a 19-year-old apprentice, showing gross pay, the 1257L tax code, income tax, National Insurance and net pay, and explains how each line is worked out. Students then make a one-page guide in Canva for Education that labels every line of the payslip and explains it in their own words, with one worked example showing how the tax code sets a tax-free personal allowance of £12,570. The guides are printed, marked by the teacher for accuracy against a checklist and kept in PSHE folders. Nobody uses their own or their family's pay details.
