Year 1 start by handling a tray of objects, a metal spoon, a wooden block, a glass jar and a wool glove, and naming what each is made of. The teacher has built a Microsoft Form with twelve photos of classroom objects and five picture-and-word answer choices: wood, metal, plastic, glass and fabric. Pairs share a tablet, an adult reads each question aloud to each table, and pairs talk before tapping an answer, entering first names only at the start. The form does not show children their results, and the teacher reads the responses after school and opens the next lesson with the two objects most often given the wrong material, the window and the jumper.
