Year 9 are asking why Britain has milder winters than places at the same latitude, such as Labrador, level with Manchester across the Atlantic. The teacher opens earth.nullschool on the board with the ocean currents layer, and the class watches the animated streams of the Gulf Stream leave the coast of Florida, cross the Atlantic and continue as the North Atlantic Drift past Ireland and Scotland. The teacher then switches to the sea surface temperature layer and moves between the waters off western Scotland and off Labrador, where the cold Labrador Current flows south, pausing so students can note both readings. Students watch throughout, adding to a sketch map in their books, and end by writing a paragraph explaining the difference using the currents and temperatures they saw.
