A Year 9 German class and a Year 9 class at a partner Gymnasium in Hamburg, who are learning English, debate whether schools should have uniforms, a real point of difference, since most German schools have none. The UK side argues in German and the Hamburg side in English, so both are working in their second language, from prepared opening speeches and sentence frames. Every student has a role: three speakers per side, a question team writing follow-up questions during the speeches, a rebuttal team, and judges from both classes who score each speech in a Mentimeter poll against criteria agreed in advance. The meeting is hosted by both teachers on school Teams accounts, whole class to whole class, with no private chat. After the result, each class writes a short summary, in the language it is learning, of the other side's strongest point.
