Year 8 are starting a population unit. The teacher explains three key terms on the board (population distribution, population density and sparsely populated), then shares a two-page view-only Google Doc on why people live where they do, with a world population density map and short sections on physical factors (relief, climate, water, soils) and human factors (jobs, transport, history). Students read on their iPads and make notes in their books under 'physical' and 'human' headings. They then shade a blank world outline map in their books to show densely and sparsely populated regions, adding one reason for each of three areas: the Nile valley, the Sahara and the Ganges plain.
