Year 8 are starting a puppetry unit linked to Michael Morpurgo's War Horse. The teacher plays the TED talk by Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler of the Handspring Puppet Company from YouTube on the board, in which puppeteers bring Joey, the life-size horse from the National Theatre production, on stage and show how the puppet breathes, shifts its weight and flicks its ears. Students watch and note three things the puppeteers do to make an object seem to think and feel. The class then moves into the studio, where groups of three bring a crumpled sheet of brown parcel paper to life as a bird, using the breath, focus and weight they noted.
