Year 8 are starting a unit on Impressionism and Monet's habit of painting the same subject at different times of day. The day before, the teacher fixed a plugged-in school tablet to the art room window, pointed at a roofline, a brick wall and the sky with no pupils in shot, and set it to time-lapse from 7am to 6pm. In the lesson the teacher plays the eleven hours on the board in well under a minute: shadows swing across the wall, the brick warms and cools as the sun moves, and the colour of the shadows changes through the day. The teacher replays it, pausing at morning, midday and late afternoon, and at each pause students mix a swatch for the lit wall and its shadow in their sketchbooks. They then compare their three pairs of swatches with three of Monet's Rouen Cathedral paintings, from morning to evening light, and annotate what Monet did with the colour of shadow.
