Year 8 are building aural skills before their keyboard composition unit. The teacher plays a four-bar rhythm in 4/4 on a woodblock three times, using crotchets, quavers, minims and one dotted crotchet followed by a quaver, and students enter what they hear into a blank Sibelius score already set to the right time signature. Before any answer is shown, each student plays their version back through headphones, hears the original once more and fixes any bar that sounds wrong, noting in their book which bar they changed and why. The class repeats the routine with two harder rhythms that add rests and syncopation, then a five-note stepwise melody in C major. The teacher reveals the answers, asks which bars students corrected after playback, and spends the last ten minutes on the dotted rhythm that many first wrote as two even quavers.
