Year 8 are starting a unit on the blues. The teacher has recorded a 12-bar blues in C with four tracks, walking bass, piano, drums and a saxophone riff, and set it as the starting project of an assignment in the class's private BandLab for Education classroom. Students open it with headphones on, solo the bass to hear the root of each bar, and mark I, IV or V in each box of a twelve-box grid on their worksheet, then solo the piano to check their answers against the chord shapes. Once the grid is complete they mute everything except the riff and note which bars it is repeated in and which note is changed to fit the new chord. The teacher collects the grids at the end and marks them before the next lesson, when the class will learn to play the pattern on keyboards.
