Year 8 are starting a case study of Lagos, the fast-growing city in Nigeria. The teacher plays a 12-minute section of a documentary podcast episode about daily life in Lagos, checked in advance, from their own Spotify account through the classroom speakers; students do not log in, because Spotify accounts are for over-13s. Before it starts the teacher sets three note-taking headings: opportunities (jobs, the informal economy, the tech sector), challenges (traffic, housing, flooding) and how residents are responding. Students take notes in their books as they listen, with the teacher pausing twice to let them catch up. They finish by writing a paragraph on whether Lagos offers more opportunities or more challenges to a young person moving there, using at least two pieces of evidence from the documentary.
