Year 8 met the basics of networks last lesson and will cable up a small network with a switch next lesson. Today the teacher talks the class through a PowerPoint that follows one request for a web page, with slide animations moving the packets along: from a school laptop to the switch, out through the school's router, across several routers on the internet to a web server, and back again. Each slide introduces one term where it first matters: LAN, WAN, IP address, packet, router, switch, server, protocol and bandwidth. Students copy the unlabelled network diagram from the first slide into their books and label it as each term appears. In the last ten minutes they write a five-sentence explanation, in order, of how the web page reaches the laptop.
