The teacher shows three crops of the same photographed still life of fruit and a jug: one with the jug dead centre, one with it on a rule-of-thirds line, and one cropped so tightly the jug is cut off. Students rank the three crops on Mentimeter from strongest to weakest composition. The teacher reads the ranking and the spread behind it, picks the crop that divides the class most, and asks one student who ranked it first and one who ranked it last to point out where their eye lands first. Students then use a card viewfinder to find two crops of the still life on their own table and sketch the stronger one.
