The teacher builds a Microsoft Forms quiz with ten word problems, each with four equations to choose from: for 'Sam has some sweets, gives away 7 and has 12 left', the options are n − 7 = 12, n + 7 = 12, 7 − n = 12 and 12 − 7 = n. The wrong options are built from real mix-ups, such as reversing a subtraction or treating the answer as the unknown. Pupils work through the quiz on their own devices while the teacher watches the live summary of responses fill up. The teacher then puts up the question where one wrong option drew the most votes, asks pupils who chose it to explain their thinking, and the class changes the wording of the problem so that option would become correct.
