Year 4 are starting a unit on performance poetry. The teacher plays Michael Rosen's own performance of Chocolate Cake from his YouTube channel on the board, first all the way through for enjoyment. On the second viewing the teacher stops at four points and replays each short section: the slow creep downstairs in the night, the whispered thoughts about just one more bit, the speeding up as the cake disappears, and the parents' question in the morning. Children watch and listen, then tell a partner one thing Rosen did with his voice or face at that moment, which the teacher collects on the flipchart. The list becomes the class checklist for performing their own poems later in the week.
