Year 11 are studying the UK's place in the wider world and its links through trade, transport and communication. In a morning lesson the teacher opens Flightradar24 on the board, zoomed out over the North Atlantic, where students watch the last of the overnight flights from North America streaming east towards Europe while the first daytime flights head west. The teacher then zooms to London, where arriving aircraft circle in the holding stacks at the edges of the city, and clicks on ten aircraft one at a time to show where each has come from, from Singapore to Johannesburg to New York. Students mark each origin on a blank world map and tally flights by continent, and the teacher widens the view to show how few aircraft cross central Africa compared with Europe. Students finish with a paragraph on what the pattern shows about the UK's global connections and the uneven links between world regions.
