Year 10 include six students who joined the school this year with limited English, and they have been losing the thread of explanations once the physics vocabulary builds up. The teacher gives the specific heat capacity explanation from a PowerPoint deck with live subtitles switched on in English along the bottom of the screen, speaking a little more slowly and using the same terms every time: energy, mass, temperature change, joules per kilogram per degree Celsius. The explanation covers why equal masses of water and aluminium warm at different rates, introduces the equation ΔE = m c Δθ and works through one example calculation. Students listen and read without taking notes, then copy the worked example from the board and try two similar calculations in their books.
