Year 1 are learning to make simple maps and to use symbols in a key. The class walks round the classroom first, noticing where the tables, carpet, door, windows, sink and book corner are, and the teacher shows what the room looks like from above with a toy figure on a tray. Each child then draws their own map in Microsoft Paint, using rectangles for tables and a circle for the carpet, and adds a key of four symbols they design for the door, windows, sink and book corner. The teacher prints the maps, and in the next lesson children use each other's maps to find a teddy hidden in the room, as the class did in previous years with maps drawn in 2Paint a Picture on Purple Mash, before the school changed its subscription.
