Kindergarten label a sunflower's roots, stem, leaves and flower in a Book Creator template

Year 1 begin in the school garden, where the teacher pulls up a sunflower so the class can see its roots, and children feel the stem and count the leaves. Back inside, each child opens a copy of the teacher's Book Creator template: a photo of a sunflower on one page, with four word labels, roots, stem, leaves and flower, waiting at the side. Children drag each label to the right part and use the pen tool to draw a line from the label to the plant, with an adult reading the words for anyone who needs it. The teacher looks through the finished books after the lesson and starts the next one by showing the part most often mislabelled.

Children place labels on the plant, which is working with content rather than making something of their own. The task is the cut-and-stick labelling sheet the class used before, with the same four labels, the same picture and the teacher checking the work after the lesson, so nothing about the task or its feedback changes.

Watch out

If children photograph a plant they have grown themselves and record their own explanation of each part, they are making something original and the lesson moves to the Creative row.
