Year 1 are learning about stories Jesus told, as set out in the locally agreed syllabus. The teacher tells the parable of the lost sheep from Luke 15, turning through eight slides that carry the pictures from the school's children's Bible: the shepherd counting ninety-nine sheep, the long search in the hills, and the party when he comes home. Children sit on the carpet and listen, and the teacher stops twice to ask how the shepherd might be feeling. After the story the class acts out the search in the hall space and talks about why Christians say the story shows that God cares for every person, and children finish by drawing the shepherd and writing one word for how he felt.
