Students study the chain of evacuation on the Western Front through photographs, RAMC war diaries, trench maps and nurses' accounts. Each student chooses one stage (a regimental aid post in a dugout, an advanced dressing station or a casualty clearing station) and builds it at full scale in CoSpaces Edu over four lessons, using the teacher's class accounts and a starter scene with a 1.8-metre figure for scale; those building the aid post also build the stretch of communication trench leading to it at the widths and turns shown on the trench maps. Every object they place, from stretchers to Thomas splints, carries a label naming the source that shows it belongs there, and anything they cannot source is left out. Students then walk the route at eye level with two bearers and a loaded stretcher, noting where the carry has to be lifted, tilted or taken out of the trench, and in the final lesson classmates walk each reconstruction, question any poorly evidenced object, and each student writes a paragraph explaining what the walk-through shows about why wounded men could wait hours for treatment.
