Students read Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart' and note where the narrator's version of events differs from what the reader suspects. The teacher gives a Twine starter file in the Harlowe story format showing (set:) and (if:), so a choice early in the story can be stored and checked later. Over the first three lessons each student writes a story with at least three choices and one tracked variable, such as how far the reader has trusted the narrator, and at least two passages whose wording changes with that variable, so the same scene reads differently for different readers. In the fourth lesson classmates play each story twice with different choices and write a short response on how the writer used the changing passages to reveal or hide the narrator's unreliability.
