Students study the crisis from the U-2 photographs of mid-October to Khrushchev's announcement of 28 October, using a teacher-prepared source pack that includes Kennedy's television address of 22 October and Khrushchev's letters of 26 and 27 October. Over three lessons each student writes a Twine story in which the reader sits on ExComm and must choose at three points: air strike or blockade, how to answer Khrushchev's two different letters, and whether to accept a secret deal over the Jupiter missiles in Turkey. Each option opens a source extract with a question about its provenance and purpose, and the story must have four endings, one of which matches what happened. Classmates play two stories and note one decision where a source changed their choice.
