Year 9 are learning that AI models reproduce patterns in the data they were trained on. Using school-approved Copilot Chat accounts and no personal details, each student is given one job from engineer, nurse, pilot, primary school teacher and software developer, and enters the same prompt five times, each in a new chat, asking for a two-sentence sketch of a named person who does that job. They log each character's name and pronoun in a shared Google Sheet, which gives the class around 150 sketches by the middle of the lesson. The teacher then shows published figures for the gender balance of each job in the UK, such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council's register data and the Department for Education's school workforce statistics, and students compare them with the pooled tallies to judge whether Copilot exaggerates, matches or evens out the real pattern. They finish by writing a paragraph on what the evidence shows, including any sketches where Copilot avoided gendering the character at all.
