The teacher opens Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Hunters in the Snow (1565) in Google Arts & Culture and shows how to zoom into the high-resolution image. Each student explores the painting, chooses one small detail, such as the thin fox slung over a hunter's back, the tired dogs or the skaters on the far ponds, and posts a one-line reading of the painting's mood plus the detail that supports it to a class Padlet. The teacher groups the posts into readings of hardship and readings of community, and asks two students from each group to show their detail on the board. Students finish by writing a sentence in their sketchbooks on how Bruegel uses small details to build the mood of the whole scene.
