The teacher gives each student an unlabelled population pyramid from a set of fifteen countries, each pyramid given to two students, including Niger, Afghanistan, India, Brazil, the UK, the USA, Japan and Italy. Students decide which stage of the demographic transition model the pyramid shows and post it to the matching Padlet column with two features that justify their choice, such as a wide base narrowing quickly, or a middle wider than the base. The teacher projects the wall and picks out pyramids that the two students placed in different stages for discussion. The teacher then reveals the country names and asks why the stage 1 column is empty: no country today has the high, fluctuating birth and death rates of stage 1.
