Year 9 are studying Mumbai as a case study of a megacity. The teacher gives students three saved placemarks in Google Earth: the main road through Dharavi, the office towers of the Bandra Kurla Complex and the seafront at Marine Drive. At each place students drop into Street View, look around and move along the street, recording three observations about housing, transport and economic activity. Street View only goes where its camera could travel along roads, so it cannot enter Dharavi's narrow lanes, and the teacher also shares photographs of its recycling and pottery workshops, making the point that it is a place of enterprise as well as hardship; faces in Street View are blurred. Students finish by writing a comparison of two of the three places, using their observations as evidence.
