Year 8 German's textbook has a box of twelve Austrian words, including Jänner for Januar, Paradeiser for Tomate, Erdäpfel for Kartoffeln, Marille for Aprikose, Sackerl for Tüte and Servus as a greeting. The class prepares one question in German per word, such as "Sagt ihr Jänner oder Januar?", and the two teachers host a Microsoft Teams call between the classes on school accounts, with students taking turns at one microphone at the front. The Vienna pupils answer, sometimes explaining that a word belongs to their grandparents rather than to them, and in return ask the class about British words they find confusing. Students tally every answer on a class table, marking each word as used by teenagers, used by older people or not used. They finish by writing three sentences in German on what their textbook gets right and wrong.
