At the start of a self-portrait unit, each student researches portraits from different cultures and periods, for example a Frida Kahlo self-portrait, a Benin bronze head of an Oba and a Rembrandt etching, using Google Arts & Culture and the web searches the teacher has pointed them to. They add 12 images to their own Padlet wall, set so it is visible to them and the teacher and not to the class or the public. Each post gets a one-line caption naming the artist (or, for a work such as the Benin head, the culture that made it), the date and the one thing they want to borrow, such as a pose, a background or a way of handling light. The teacher reviews the walls before the next lesson, and students work from them when they start their compositions.
