Year 8 have plotted linear graphs from tables of values and are moving on to reading equations directly. The teacher runs the department's card-sort lesson in Desmos Classroom: twelve graph cards and twelve equation cards, dragged into pairs. Three pairs are deliberate near-misses, such as y = 2x + 1 beside y = 2x - 1 and y = -x + 3 beside y = x + 3, because arguing about the near-misses is where the learning happens. Students sort alone for ten minutes, then compare with a partner and settle disagreements by pointing at gradients and intercepts rather than guessing. The teacher circulates, listens to the arguments, and picks the most common mismatch heard around the room for a short re-teach before students write the rule for reading gradient and intercept in their books.
