Year 6 are practising inference with non-fiction. The teacher has loaded a 12-minute extract about coral reefs from an Our Planet episode, which Netflix has made free to watch on YouTube, into Edpuzzle with skipping turned off. At five points the video stops for a short voice note from the teacher that points to a word in the narration or an image and asks the children to think about what it suggests, for example what the narrator's description of a bleached reef implies about its health. Children join the teacher's Edpuzzle class with a class code on school accounts, watch on their own tablets with headphones, and at each note jot an inference and its evidence in a two-column table in their books. The class then compares inferences, and each child writes up their strongest as a point, evidence, explanation paragraph.
