The teacher shows a close-up photo of part of a Roman strigil, a curved bronze blade, without saying what it is. Each pair posts a first guess at its use to a class Padlet with one clue from the photo. The teacher then reveals two more pictures in turn, the whole object beside a ruler and the Apoxyomenos, a Roman marble copy of a Greek statue of an athlete scraping his arm, and after each reveal pairs add a comment under their own post saying whether their guess has changed and why. The teacher reads down the wall to show which clue changed most guesses, explains that Romans oiled their skin at the baths and scraped it clean with a strigil, and pairs finish by naming the clue they missed.
