Year 4 are starting Ted Hughes' The Iron Man as their class novel. The teacher has scanned the first chapter into a Book Creator book, within the school's copying licence, and kept it in the class library, which only the class can see. On each page the teacher has recorded their own reading and placed a small picture next to each harder word with a short voice note explaining it, so children hear the explanation on the page where they meet the word. Children listen with headphones while following the text, replaying a page or a word explanation as often as they need. Afterwards the teacher leads a discussion of what the Iron Man is and where he came from, and children draw and label him in their books using three words from the chapter.
