The teacher divides the school grounds into fifteen zones, such as the hedge, the pond edge, the flowerbed and a corner of the playground, and each pair surveys theirs in three short sessions across the week, photographing plants and minibeasts with no people in shot and noting where each was found. In the first lesson pairs identify their species with a class key. In the second, working in a Google Earth project the teacher has shared with the class, each pair adds a placemark for its zone with photos, a species list and two sentences on why those living things suit that habitat. The class then explores the map together, comparing damp, shady zones with dry, sunny ones, and the project stays shared with the class only through school accounts.
