The teacher sets up one Microsoft Whiteboard with a labelled area for each pair, each holding five era columns (Stone Age, Ancient Egypt, Roman, medieval, modern) and the same twelve artefact pictures, including a flint hand axe, a canopic jar, a Roman coin, a knight's helmet and a smartphone. Pairs drag every picture into a column. The teacher zooms out to show all the areas on the board at once, finds the artefacts pairs disagree on, often the clay oil lamp and the pottery beaker, and asks the pairs involved to explain their clues. After the debate, pairs move any picture they now think is in the wrong column, and the class agrees one final order.
