Year 2 are studying Vincent van Gogh before painting their own night skies. The teacher opens The Starry Night on Google Arts & Culture and zooms in slowly, stopping on the swirls in the sky, the ring of strokes around the moon and the dark flames of the cypress tree, until single brushstrokes fill the board. Children watch from the carpet and describe what they see, and the teacher asks which way each stroke goes and whether the paint looks thick or thin. The class then practises three of the marks they spotted, swirls, short dashes and dots, with oil pastels on black card, before starting their own night sky in the next lesson.
