Grade 12 (Year 13, age 17 to 18) · 60 min · 1 device per student
The teacher shares a Google Sheet of anonymised practice data from a previous year's river fieldwork: channel width, depth and velocity at ten sites downstream. Each student works in their own named tab, ranking width and distance downstream and calculating Spearman's rank correlation coefficient with the formula. A summary tab the teacher has set up pulls every student's value onto the board as it is calculated, so answers that differ from the rest show up at once, usually from tied ranks or a sign error, and the teacher stops the class to fix the common one. Students then test their value against the critical values table, write two sentences interpreting the result against the Bradshaw model, and suggest why site 7 does not fit. Current students' own NEA data is not used, so their NEA analysis stays independent.
