Year 11 are revising the work of past designers for the written paper, and Marcel Breuer and the Bauhaus come up every year. The teacher leads a tour of the Bauhaus collections on Google Arts & Culture from the front, zooming into high-resolution photographs of Marianne Brandt's 1924 tea infuser and Breuer's tubular steel chairs until the class can see the bends, fixings and finishes, and the absence of applied decoration. At each object the teacher stops and names one design decision: why bent steel tube suited batch and mass production, why the infuser's handle is ebony rather than metal. Students watch and fill a three-column sheet headed object, decision and Bauhaus principle. The lesson ends with a six-mark practice question on how Breuer's work shaped modern furniture.
