Year 11 are preparing for the written exam question on how they would perform a key moment from An Inspector Calls. The teacher gives each student their own copy of the Inspector's final speech in Act Three, which ends with the warning that if men will not learn, they will be taught "in fire and blood and anguish". Students work alone, annotating each line with vocal choices, such as where the pace slows and where the volume drops, and physical choices, such as where the Inspector moves and whom he turns to, with a one-line reason for each linked to Priestley's message about collective responsibility. The teacher circulates and questions any choice that has no reason attached, then collects the documents and marks them after the lesson against the department's criteria. Next lesson students turn their two strongest annotations into an exam paragraph.
