Year 10 have studied Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines in November 2013, as their tropical storm case study for the natural hazards paper. Students open Copilot on their school accounts and paste in the teacher's prompt: ask me one question at a time on the causes, effects and responses to Typhoon Haiyan at GCSE level, tell me what I got right and what I missed after each answer, and make the next question harder if I was right. They answer from memory, and after every piece of feedback they check it against the textbook case study page and record it in a two-column log: feedback that agreed with the textbook, and feedback that did not. Where Copilot's figures for the storm surge at Tacloban, the death toll or the number of people displaced differ from the textbook, the textbook figure goes into their notes and the difference goes into the log. Halfway through the teacher reads the logs around the room and stops the class to settle the two points most students got wrong; nobody enters personal details, and the teacher checks any feedback students query.
