Year 10 are studying the life of the Buddha for GCSE Religious Studies. Over two lessons, each student builds a Sutori timeline of the key events as Buddhist tradition tells them: the birth of Siddhartha Gautama at Lumbini, his sheltered life in the palace, the four sights, the great renunciation, the years of extreme asceticism, enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, the first sermon in the deer park at Sarnath, and his death, or parinirvana, at Kushinagar. For each event they write a short account, add an image of the site today and, where it helps, a short clip the teacher has placed in the class's starter timeline, such as pilgrims at the Mahabodhi Temple, then explain what Buddhists take the event to teach, such as the Middle Way, noting where traditions tell it differently. Each student ends by embedding two quiz questions and answering a classmate's inside the class's Sutori space.
