Year 10 know A Christmas Carol well and have written close analyses of single extracts. The teacher loads the full Project Gutenberg text into a shared Google Sheet, one sentence per row with a column showing its stave, and teaches COUNTIFS with wildcards. Each student chooses two semantic fields to test, for example cold (cold, frost, ice, chill, freezing) against warmth (warm, fire, glow, blaze, merry), counts the sentences in each stave that contain each word, checks a sample for false matches such as 'scold', and charts the results across the whole novella. Many expect cold words to fade by Stave Five and warmth to rise, and the counts let them test that, including where in the story warmth appears and whose scenes it belongs to. Over three lessons students write a 600-word argument in Google Docs that uses their chart alongside quotations, and the boldest claims are tested against the text in class.
