Year 1 have been finding one more and one less with cubes and bead strings, and the teacher wants to check the numbers from 10 to 20 before moving on. She builds a ten-question Kahoot where every question is a picture, such as a tower of 13 cubes or a number track with a gap, and she reads each one aloud so that children who cannot yet read the text can still answer. Teams of three talk, agree and tap one of four answer tiles on a shared tablet, playing under animal team names from a list rather than their own names, with the game run from the teacher's account and no pupil accounts. After each question the class sees the right answer and a bar chart of how the room split, and when question five sends half the teams to 21 for 'one less than 20', she pauses the game, counts back along the bead string with the class and then carries on. The lesson ends with each team showing one more and one less than their table number with cubes.
