The teacher posts the opening two paragraphs of Mrs Dalloway and assigns each student one critical lens: feminist, Marxist, postcolonial, psychoanalytic or ecocritical. Each student writes a two- or three-sentence reading of one detail in the extract through that lens and posts it in the matching Padlet column. The teacher reads across the columns during the lesson and pairs students from different lenses who have picked up the same detail, such as Clarissa's decision to buy the flowers herself, to explain how their readings differ. Students finish by writing which lens gave them the most to say about the extract, and what it missed.
