The teacher divides The Waste Land into as many passages as there are students, about 25 to 30 lines each for a class of fifteen, and gives each passage its own section of a shared Google Doc, headed with its line numbers and first line, while students work from their own copies of the set text. Each student adds bullet-point notes on voice, allusion and imagery under their passage's heading. The teacher reads the Doc as it fills and flags neighbouring passages where two students have traced the same motif, such as water or the unreal city, so they can compare notes before the plenary. The class ends by scrolling the notes in poem order and naming three motifs that run across its five sections.
